  • Nutritional Information

We work hard to produce the most nutritious protein possible!

For years, the National Bison Association has mass-produced "nutritional value" labels based on USDA testing from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Those values were not in line with store-bought bison nutritional labeling.

Because we know that many, if not most, bison purchased in grocery stores is grain-fed or finished, we chose to raise our own bison, which we continue to call American Buffalo in honor of their history. Grain-free is important to us because:
1 - grain is not a natural dietary substance for the wild buffalo
2 - grain-fed anything is not part of our personal diet

After some research, we discovered that the nutritional values promoted by the NBA are derived from Italian Buffalo testing, not American Buffalo.

This discovery has left several questions for us concerning the difference between grain-fed and/or finished vs pure grass-fed and finished values.

As a result, we have taken on the responsibility of having our meats tested by Midwest Labratories. We continue to monitor our herd's health through extensive testing of soil, forages, and water, as well as liver testing to determine where we can improve.  To compare our bison protein with other store-bought visit this link, choose the "Branded Foods" tab, then search BISON in the left tab.

Our policy has been and will always be complete transparency! We want our customers to know you can trust that we are in this for the health of our herd and for us!

  • Gate-To-Plate

Sadly, what we're witnessing unfold in the bison world is a parallel to the cattle industry. Many of the animals in existence today end their life in a feedlot environment.

The results are driving the need for more and more vaccines to prevent illnesses that will prevent USDA-inspected harvests.

Our herd is bred, born, and raised on our land where they are not 'rotated' from pasture to pasture, but instead roam our land as American Buffalo did through the mid-1800s.

Our herd population is controlled through harvests to ensure that we manage our land and grazing inventory sufficiently and without the need for grain or other supplements.

We raise our animals on our lands, and we field harvest selected animals here as well.  We firmly believe this to be the most natural and humane method of any form of harvest. They are dispatched in a calm, familiar environment without stress or fear in their last moments.  Our one-shot-one-kill requirement ensures the stress that can impact the quality of our meat is reduced significantly with this method, and honors the life of our Buffalo throughout the entirety of its life.
